Tiffany Lamps A Beautiful Lamp for Any Decor

Tiffany Lamps originated with Louis Comfort Tiffany son of Charles Lewis Tiffany founder of Tiffany & Co.  Louis was an artist as well as a business man.  Between the years of 1865 to 1872 he traveled to Europe five times.  There he studied art with an express interest in Islamic architecture, Roman & Moorish art, and Japanese ceramics.   When he returned home to the states he began studying glass art and other mosaics.  This led him to begin work with stained glass. 

About this time the incandescent light bulb was becoming widely popular.  Louis was also an admirer of Thomas Edison.  It was this admiration and the popularity of the light bulb that sparked in Louis the idea to create the tiffany lamp.  He used his mastery of stained glass art to create a wide variety of tiffany lamps. 

Today tiffany lamps are very popular and are available as tiffany style floor lamps, tiffany table lamps, tiffany desk lamps, tiffany hanging lamps, and ceiling pendants.  There are also many styles available:  Dragonfly Tiffany lamps, Mission Style Tiffany lamps, Museum Quality Tiffany lamps are a few of the most common designs.

Tiffany style lamps are made today in the same method as Louis Comfort Tiffany made his masterpieces.  First the pattern for the lamp is drawn out on a heavy piece of cardboard.  Next the intended color is written in each section, as well as the number of the glass piece.  The glass is then overlaid on the cardboard & the pattern is copied onto the glass.  Then the glass is cut, shaped, and sanded to the proper size & smoothness.  Copper foil is then put around all the edges of each piece of glass.  Lastly, the tiffany lamps are put together and the copper between each glass piece is welded together.  A final cleaning of the tiffany style lamp completes the process.
