Learning how to seal grout with a grout sealer is very important if you plan on maintaining grout that is clean and that doesn't get stained easily. A lot of people commonly ask if they need to seal their grout. Some people have never done it, and they think that the grout is supposed to get dirty on a regular basis. The truth is that tile grout is not supposed to get dirty very easily. If you use a grout sealer and you apply two or three applications, you can create a waterproof coating that is resistant to almost any type of dirt.

When to Apply Grout Sealer for the First Time

The first time that you apply a grout sealer should be right after your grout has been installed and has had a chance to dry. You want to apply the grout sealer to the porous surface of the grout. The grout will be like a dry sponge, soaking up whatever is placed on it. This is the perfect time for you to apply a grout sealer because the dry grout will just soak it all in. The first time you apply a grout sealer, you should definitely use two or three coats. The reason why you should do this is so that you can make sure to have the surface completely covered. With a grout sealer in place, the grout will no longer be a sponge absorbing everything that comes across it, rather it will reflect the dirt and grime off of the surface. Using a grout sealer makes it much harder for your grout to get dirty.

How Often Should I Seal My Grout?

When you're first learning how to seal grout, it is a good idea to know how often to apply your grout sealant. Most people should plan on applying a grout sealer every 6 to 8 months. Before you apply it, you should probably clean it and reapply your grout sealer. Make sure that you do not apply the grout sealant to grout that is still dirty. Make sure it is thoroughly cleaned so that you do not seal the dirt and germs into the grout lines. Also make sure that you are not stealing any stains or discoloration into the grout. You want to get rid of it all before you apply your sealant (unless you are also using a colorant that will change the color of the grout anyway).

Types Of Grout Sealers You Can Use

There are actually a lot of different types of grout sealers that you can use to seal your grout and make it really last for a long time. Some of these sealers are water-based grout sealers, and some are oil based sealers, or those that also contain silicon. The one that you choose is really up to you. If you use a water-based sealer, it is generally cheaper, so this is usually what I recommend to people who haven't used a grout sealant before, and to people who are on a budget. Most of the time, you will use a roller applicator to apply it to the grout lines, or a grout painting brush. If the grout lines are really tiny, you may decide to use a grout sealant spray. I would only recommend the spray for really tiny grout lines. Otherwise, I would use a bottle roller applicator. Two good-quality grout sealers that you can use are Aqua Mix and Stone Tech.
